Lennie Small; A simple man with a simple mind in a not-so-simple world. Lennie is mentally handicapped, living in the 1930’s during the Great Depression with his friend and caretaker, George. Because Lennie has the mind of a child but the strength and appearance of a 30-year-old man, which often gets him in trouble. He poorly hides the evidence of his wrongdoing, and cannot fully understand the cost of his own actions which ultimately results in his death. Sample Essay on Beowulf The epic story of Beowulf depicts a young man destined to find his place in Anglo-Saxon society as a hero, the deliverer of his people. Set out from his youth, Beowulf was enthralled, perhaps obsessed, with the idea of fame and accomplishment. His thirst for both fueled the remainder of his life as a leader amongst leaders and a true hero in the entire sense of the term. Unlike most heroes in literature that are often portrayed as having humble beginnings, Beowulf’s youth is relatively fortunate and comfortable. Nevertheless, Beowulf’s obvious passion to achieve the Anglo-Saxon value of fame and honor is unwavering and will lead him to his eventual fate. Beowulf is singled out early as a â€Å"superior being† amongst his peers. â€Å"[†¦] Beowulf, Higlac’s/ Follower and the strongest of the Geats—stronger than anyone anywhere in this world—[†¦]†(ll. 09-111) This distinction that he was of superior physical capabilities quickly led Beowulf to develop and inherit a superior mental capacity, one filled with an ability to lead and an aura of pompousness that he took with him to battle and amongst his people. This is demonstrated when the tale explains, â€Å"Beowulf arose with his men/ Around him, ordering a few to remain/ With their weapons, leading the others quickly[†¦]† (ll. 134-136) Beowulf’s leadership is characteristic of a true hero and one whom will continue on to deliver his people. Beowulf’s true talent was best displayed in the various competitions and battles he engaged in throughout his famed tale. His unwavering confidence and perhaps boastful personality struck not only fear but also awe and inspiration into the hearts and minds of his people. â€Å"My hands/ Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life/ Against the monster,†(ll. 172-174) Beowulf boldly claimed as he prepared to confront Grendel in battle. Beowulf’s audacity is exemplified through this and many acts of uncontrollable valor and courage. Thus is the root of his people’s admiration and their desire to follow in his ways and under his guidance. As if this was not enough to remind the people of Beowulf’s accomplishments and feats, Beowulf was compelled to ensure his status and society and seal his place in fame. â€Å"The victory, for the proof, hanging high/ From the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster’s/ Arm, claw, and shoulder and all. † (ll. 515-517) Beowulf, through the actions, accomplishments, and everlasting pursuit of his dream of fame, gained the respect of his people and prepared himself for true kingly status and to gain the recognition as the deliverer of his people. Perhaps the greatest mark of a hero is his or her ability to not only lead a life of good deeds and tremendous feats, but also to train and educate the youth in order for his or her society to perpetuate. Beowulf’s character is certainly one to do this and thus is the reason he may be dubbed a deliverer. Beowulf makes a significant impact upon his followers, in particular the soldiers he had chosen to be with him. One in particular, Wiglaf, makes a spirited speech amongst his fellow soldiers as Beowulf has gone off to fight without their aide. In this address Wiglaf declares, â€Å" ‘Our glorious king! By almighty G-d,/ I’d rather burn myself than see/ Flames swirling around my lord. † (ll. 780-782) Such a comment makes one question how much of an impact they can truly have on their peers. To have such awe inspiring powers so as to gain the trust and respect of your men to the extent that they would indeed take greater pleasure in their deaths than that of their own is truly incredible. This is the recognition point for the reader in which he or she can truly tell that Beowulf has delivered his people into a new generation. In the final crowning moment of any life, one can only wish for a companion to pass on his or her legacy. Such a characteristic is inherit in the life of hero, and this is no different than the end of Beowulf’s life. â€Å"[†¦]telling stories/ Of their [soldiers] dead king and his greatness, his glory,/ Praising him for his heroic deeds, for a life/ As noble as his name. † Not only had Beowulf become a figure of fame in his life, but he had obtained the ultimate fame: Beowulf had become a legend, and, in that, Beowulf would forever continue to teach his lessons and to demonstrate his talent for generations to come as he had successfully delivered his people, the Geats. And Burton Raffel made sure that Beowulf was full of said imagery, especially during the first, second, and third climaxes of the poem. In Beowulf, the imagery for the first climax is full of surprise, violence and suspense. The suspense starts when Grendel snatches up the first Geat he sees and tears him apart. Imagery is used to intensify Grendel’s actions by tenfold. For example, â€Å"Grendel snatched at the first Geat/ he came to, ripped him apart, cut/ his body to bits with powerful jaws,/ drank his blood from his veins and bolted/ him down, hands and feet/ (line 739, page 46). Without that gruesome and violent imagery, Grendel would seem meek and boring. But that only begins the suspense and violence of the first climax. Imagery is greatly used when Beowulf and Grendel battle to the death. Beowulf fought Grendel and he â€Å"fastened those claws in his fists till they cracked,† (line 760, page 47) which shows that Beowulf was a strong entity and without the imagery, we wouldn’t quite grasp how inhumanly strong Beowulf was. Herot trembled while they battled which gives us the interpretation that the battle was intense and if Burton Raffel had not incorporated that bit in the story, we wouldn’t understand how extreme the battle between the two foes was. Lastly, imagery is used to show Grendel’s death. For example, â€Å"He twisted in pain/ And the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split/ And broke,† (line 815, page 480) which just proves that without the imagery during his death, Grendel would have died a very non descriptive and utterly unimportant death. Without imagery, the first climax would be dull, lifeless, and not in the least bit suspenseful. Not only is there imagery in the first climax, but it is also present in the second climax as well. With Grendel dead, it leaves Grendel’s’ mum in a fit of despair and rage so she travels to Herot to avenge Grendel’s death. The imagery is violent and animalistic. For example, â€Å"Smashing their shining swords, their bloody/ Hammer-forged blades onto boar-shaped helmets,/ Slashing and stabbing with the sharpest of points,† (line 1285, page 64) shows the Geats preparing to kill Grendel’s mum, but she ends up victimizing Hrothgar’s closest friend who was â€Å"sheltered in her dripping claws,† (line 1295, page 64). The mental image that this climax contains renders the fact that if there was no present imagery, Grendel’s mum would not have an important character line. She would just be a mother that missed her child, not a blood thirsty, venomous monster that captured an important person. The imagery for the second climax was just as well done as the first one and it exceeded in creating a violent and suspenseful atmosphere. And now, here is the imagery for the final climax. In this climax, a dragon entered the scene and brought imagery along with it. For example, â€Å"Vomiting fire and smoke, the dragon/ Burned down their homes. They watched in horror/ As the flames rose up: the angry monster/ Meant to leave nothing alive. And the signs/ Of its anger flickered and glowed in the darkness, visible for miles, tokens of its hate/ And its cruelty, spread like a warning to the Geats who had broken its rest. † (line 2312, page 95) This part of the poem shows us the dragon’s rage and its ill conclusion to burn down everything in its path. Without this wonderful and descriptive segment, the dragon would just be another creature and would pose no threat. But with this imagery, the dragon is depicted as a horrible monster that thirsts for terror and chaos. Not only does the dragon cause chaos, but it’s actually the cause of Beowulf’s departure to the world. A tusk wound to Beowulf’s neck seals his fate. The imagery for Beowulf’s fatal wound is dreadful and gruesome. â€Å"Watching for its chance it drove its tusk/ Into Beowulf’s neck; he staggered, the blood/ Came flooding forth, fell like rain,† (line 2691, page 106). This imagery is what makes this poem the successful composition it is today. As written above, during the first, second, and third climaxes of the poem, imagery was the key ingredient to making a delicious cake. The world without imagery would be a bland, plain, and unexciting place to live. Books would be full of sentences only approved by preschoolers and they wouldn’t be as enjoyable as they are today. Burton Raffel did a mesmerizing job with captivating the readers of Beowulf with scenes of despair, gore, hope, and faith. In the end, Greened, mortally wounded goes back the fen and moor where he dies and goes to hell; ‘Pr him hell inferno (line 852) because no matter what he was, his actions made is soul lost. When Beowulf Is In Horror the first evening when he arrived, he Is confronted by a Dane. Hunter, who Is, In fact, a murderer, having killed his own brother, questions Beowulf heroism. What strikes me is that everybody knows he has killed his brother he has not been punished, that we know of. In this case it seems to me that the narrator wants the audience to believe that punishment is given by God, not by humans. In conclusion God ruled over the fate of Greened through Beowulf actions. As the story still goes on, we don’t know the fates of Beowulf or Hunter yet. When they die, however they die, their fates will be determined at the gates and can still go either way as God can have mercy on Hunter, or decide to punish him still. Beowulf fate, as an instrument of God, should be easy to determine. He used Beowulf to determine Grenade’s fate, and he should be rewarded as such. In The Miller’s Tale, the characters are also portrayed in a way that is different than society today. The miller emphasizes that intelligence is the most important characteristic in a person and not wealth. He talks about Nicholas and how his intelligence helped him trick the carpenter. Although the carpenter was wealthy, this did not give him an advantage when it came to Nicholas’s plan. Society today is focused more on wealth and status instead of education. People believe that education is not needed as long as you are wealthy, and that you will have an advantage in life as long as you have money. This clearly goes against the miller’s belief that education is more important than wealth. Beowulf and The Miller’s Tale are different in the way that they portray women. In Beowulf, women were loyal to their husbands and respected their family and themselves. They had certain duties as a wife or mother and they made sure their job was done well. In The Miller’s Tale, Allison is portrayed in a different way. She is a typical woman with beautiful features that all men are thirsty for. She is not loyal to her husband and uses her beauty as a way to get attention from other men. In the poem, Allison uses sympathy to trick her husband into leaving so she can be alone with Nicholas. The poem states, â€Å"Help us to scape, or we been dede eechoon. I am thy trwew verray wedded wif: Go, dere spouse, and help to save or lif† (Chaucer, 209). This showed the lack of loyalty Allison had for her husband John, and how she was able to trick him into leaving her and Nicholas alone. Allison is unaware of her behavior and acts like cheating on her husband is okay. The lack of respect she has for her husband and for herself is different than the women in Beowulf. The Miller’s Tale and Beowulf also have different tones and imagery. The tone of Beowulf is more serious and gruesome and the imagery is more vibrant. The narrator talks about the battles and characters with much detail so the reader can pinpoint the importance of what the narrator is saying. When talking about Grendel, the narrator makes sure the reader can tell that he is not just a demon, but a â€Å"captain of evil†. The poem states, â€Å"He grabbed and mauled a man on his bench, bit into his bone-lappings, bolted down his blood and gorged on him in lumps† (Beowulf, 42). Grendel is described in a more detailed and gruesome way and this shows the reader the seriousness of Grendel’s character. The detailed description also puts a clear image into the readers head. The Miller’s Tale has a more straightforward and comedic tone. Events are described without personal insight from the narrator. The tone becomes comedic as the narrator describes the events in a way that seems like he is unaware of what he is saying. For example, when Absolon kisses Allison’s butt, the narrator describes it like it is no big deal. The poem states, â€Å"But with his mouth he kiste hir naked ers, ful savourly, er he were war of this† (Chaucer, 212). The reader could imagine what is going on, but the lack of detail does not make the image as clear or virbrant. The narrator’s sense of humor and lack of attention to what he or she is saying also brings humor to the poem. The Wife of Bath, also by Geoffrey Chaucer, has a similarity to Beowulf. Both poems contain symbolism. In the prologue of The Wife of Bath, the wife compares herself and other women to loaves of bread. The wheat bread symbolizes virgins while the less-expensive barley bread symbolizes wives. She makes the point that virgins or white bread may be preferred, but barley bread is just as nice. The poem states, â€Å"I won’t envy them virginity: let them be white bread of finest wheat, and let us wives be called barley bread†¦ † (Chaucer,189). The wife continues to compare the bread to the sexuality of her youth. In Beowulf, there is also symbolism. The great banquet that is held at Herorot after the defeat of Grendel symbolizes the restoration of order and peace to the Danish people. There is rebuilding of the damaged mead-hall and this also symbolizes the rebirth of the community. Although the author of Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales are different, both poems have there similarities. The way that the characters are portrayed and how their descriptions conflict with society today is similar and both poems use symbolism. The differences of Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales are seen within the tone, images and the portrayal of women. The similarities and differences are emphasized in each poem as the authors’ writing style is examined, along with the use of literary devices. It can be your weakness in the long run by making you prideful; however in the end, mental strength and wisdom are stronger than physical strength. Hrothgar tries to make Beowulf understand what he is saying by using his own life as a comparison, â€Å"just so I ruled the Ring-Danes country for fifty years,/ assaults by many tribes† (1762-1772). Hrothgar tells Beowulf of how strong and mighty he was and how he protected his land for a long time from many enemies. This quote is important because it serves to use as a comparison between Beowulf and Hrothgar. Hrothgar was once mighty and strong like Beowulf, but as time went on, he grew old. When Grendel and his mother came, Hrothgar was unable to defend his people. Beowulf is mighty and strong now, but Hrothgar warns him that this will not last forever. The king also tries to tell Beowulf to choose the eternal rewards and not to give way to pride, to â€Å"beware the trap† (1758). In this quote Hrothgar uses the metaphor â€Å"trap† to say pride is a trap. Pride, in this novel, is the downfall of Beowulf. Pride causes men to take unnecessary risks and therefore traps them in a false sense of security, causing their inevitable demise. Beowulf has pride in his physical accomplishments, but this is fleeting and will eventually be his own trap causing his death. This speech ties in well with the rest of the poem. Beowulf has physical satisfaction but lacks the spiritual satisfaction gained, not from fighting or defending, but by finding inner meaning. Physical strength is shown to fade throughout the entire poem as well as pride being a weakness. Beowulf’s pride causes him to try and kill a dragon not fully protected and Hrothgar shows us that physical strength does not last forever. This epic and speech has shown us that youth will fade, it can be your weakness in the long run by making you prideful, and in the end mental strength and wisdom are stronger than physical strength. Reasons for Revision In this paper I did not read the prompt well enough causing a lot of formatting errors. I also did not explain my quotes enough and what they mean. I changed all of this and hopefully was able to get my formatting right by using double spacing, commas and citing my works correctly. For analysis I explained my quotes and how they tie into the rest of the epic. Compare and Contrast of the Two Poems “To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to free essay sample

â€Å"To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph† by Anne Sexton and â€Å"Waiting for Icarus† by Muriel Rukeyser are two of many poems that allude to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. In her poem, Sexton looks at the myth from a different angle than most people. Instead of writing that Icarus was naughty and arrogant, Sexton praises him constantly, implying that he was amazing for taking so many risks and being adventurous and dismisses his death as unimportant. Some people think that Sexton alluded to a poem called â€Å"To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Nothing† by William Butler Yeats along with the Icarus myth to console a friend about her actions. Rukeyser’s poem alludes to the Icarus myth to tell the story of a girl whose boyfriend, who might be Icarus, has left her and how she is lamenting about her lost love and time and also the way she is discouraged by close ones. By comparing and contrasting the two poems, it is possible to deduce that some similarities and differences lie in the point of view, mood and theme. The point of view in the two poems greatly contrasts each other with the authors having used them for specific reasons. Sexton wrote the poem in a third-person point of view and it is about how Icarus’s flight was amazing and how she admired it. Sexton may have used third-person as it is far more reliable than a first-person perspective. The reader may not have been convinced that Icarus was great if Sexton used first-person since Icarus would probably have said that his flight was good. Even though the reader knows that the poem is fictional, there would be still less effect. Third-person would be more convincing as it would seem more like a review from a neutral, unbiased person. For example, the reader would be more likely to agree with a third person narrator commenting â€Å"Admire his wings!† instead of Icarus commenting â€Å"Admire my wings!† On the other hand, Rukeyser’s poem uses a first-person point of view, again with good reason. Since Rukeys er’s poem is about a girl moaning and lamenting how her boyfriend has either dumped her or is dead, first-person makes it easier for the author to express her sad feelings. Although if the author used words such as â€Å"He said he would be back and they’d drink wine together† and â€Å"She remembered they said he only wanted to get away from her† may have similar meanings, using â€Å"we†, â€Å"I† and â€Å"me†, respectively, instead makes the reader feels more sympathy for her. In the two poems, the authors use different, contrasting point of views to help fully make the reader feel the way they intended them too. Besides the point of view, the moods in the two poems are generally different as well while they do share one minor similarity. The similarity in the two poems is that although the mood has a general tone, it changes a bit from the first stanza to the last. In Sexton’s poem, the mood is generally lighthearted and happy. At the start, the mood is sort of prideful, as Sexton writes that Icarus has a â€Å"first flawless moment over the lawn† and â€Å"Admire his wings!† Sexton also insults the trees and the ground for being as â€Å"awkward as camels.† After that, the poem is generally relaxed through the use of some exclamation marks and words such as â€Å"casually† and â€Å"wondrously.† However, at the very end of the poem, there seems to be some feeling of disapproval or sarcasm as Sexton writes â€Å"as his sensible daddy goes straight into town,† which sarcastically implies that Daedalus had an uneventful flight and making it to safety wasn’t worth it. Rukeyser’s poem, in contrast, has a general mood of sadness. However, there are also very slight changes in the type of sadness throughout the poem. At the start, there is sadness because the girl is lamenting about how her boyfriend has dumped her and run away after promising that he will come back for her. Words such as â€Å"Wait for me† and â€Å"Just don’t cry† enforce the sadness as readers of the myth know that he will not come back and that the promise will be broken. After that, the sadness changes to a discouraged type of sadness as the narrator’s friends discourage her, â€Å"laughing† at her and say that her boyfriend â€Å"only wanted to get away† from her. Her mother also gives her zero support, saying that inventors are â€Å"a trashy lot† and that she is â€Å"worst† for loving him. During the end, the mood becomes helpless as the girl wants â€Å"to try those wings† and escape from her current situation since that she can do nothing. In summary, the moods in the two poems are generally different as one is happy, light and relaxed while the other is dark and sad, although they both change slightly from the start to the end. Finally, the themes in the two poems are different from each other, although Rukeyser’s poem may have a deeper, better developed theme. In Sexton’s poem, there is a core message, which is that it is better to take risks and be adventurous, like Icarus, than to be safe but not take any risks, like Daedalus. The theme she could be exploring is that risk-taking is accepted and admirable and is better than living a long life in vain without any risk-taking, which lessens the chances of being able to do a remarkable and well-remembered achievement. In her poem, Sexton constantly praises Icarus and seems to think that his flight was the best, supporting him for being adventurous and writes that â€Å"Who cares that he fell back to the sea?† That might imply that Sexton thought that Icarus’s death was unimportant, as he has managed to be one of the first people to fly and has â€Å"wondrously† tunneled â€Å"into that hot eye,† or the sun, which is not something everybody gets to try. On the other hand, instead of having just one core theme, Rukeyser’s poem may have several themes. For example, one of the themes could be that how many people try hard to meet their parents’ expectations. Evidence is the line, â€Å"He said that he would never again cringe before his father,† which might mean that the father of the girl’s boyfriend was a very great man and that the boyfriend always felt embarrassed in front of him. Another theme is that in the second stanza, the way the girl is treated can reflect the social phenomenon of the author’s time – women were discouraged by close ones. Other people are â€Å"laughing† at the girl and her mother scolds her, saying that she is â€Å"worst† for loving â€Å"such.† Also, a possible theme is that many parents often discourage their children from being dreamers, such as musicians, artists, inventors or poets as they claim that i t is unstable; many dreamers often live in poverty and only some make it. In the poem, the girl’s mother says a similar thing, stating that â€Å"Inventors are like poets, a trashy lot† and that â€Å"Those who try out inventions are worse.† Finally, at the last stanza, the girl expresses her desire to â€Å"try those wings myself,† or leave her current situation. That might imply that it is sometimes best to walk away when situations seem too hard to handle. Overall, the poems might allude to the same myth, but the two poems have different themes which convey different messages to the reader. The two poems have some similarities but large amounts of contrast in many different ways, which include point of view, mood and theme. The two poems use completely different point of views while the moods are the complete opposite of each other although they both have graduate, slight modifications. The themes are also totally different and Rukeyser’s poem has more than Sexton’s. One of the things that must be appreciated is that while both poems allude to the Icarus myth, the authors have successfully made their poems mean many different things through several ways and techniques. In conclusion, the contrast between these two poems illustrate something amazing and important about poems – poems may be based on or allude to the same thing, but through many different methods and tricks, an author can make them mean completely unalike, contrasting things.

Legalization of Drugs Such an issue stirs up moral and religious beliefs; beliefs that are contrary to what America should "believe". However, such a debate has been apparent in the American marketplace of ideas before with the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920's. With the illegality of alcohol the mafia could produce liquor and therefore had considerable control over those who wanted their substance and service. The role that the mafia played in the 1920's has transformed into the corner drug dealers and drug cartel of the 1990's. The justification that legalized alcohol under Amendment 21 in 1933 should also legalize drugs in 1996. With the legalization of drugs a decrease in deaths related to drug deals would occur and also the price would lessen because bigger businesses could produce drugs at a cheaper price. Thus, reducing crimes that are committed to support a drug habit. Another drug that has played a major role in American society is nicotine. For hundreds of years, cigarettes have been a popular legal drug within the United States. Only through legalization and education has the popularity and the use of cigarettes declined within the past ten years. Physically, the actual consequences of using illicit drugs is much less than of using drugs like alcohol or cigarettes and the consequences will be diminished. Illicit drugs can and will be made safer than they are in the present system. In making comparisons, the best is to look at how countries are functioning that have less enforcement on drugs and what the statistics were after drugs were decriminalized. Within the last thirty years many groups have their attempts. The use of drugs is a victimless crime much like homosexuality. Homosexuals have fought for a great deal of freedom that is based on their basic human rights; the right to make decisions and act freely based on what is protected under the Constitution, so long as anyone else is not affected. Economically, the production of drugs in the United States would benefit the financial well being of the American government and people. Taxes should immediately be placed on drugs thus resulting in a significant increase in government income. The more money that government receives is more money that they can put towards the education of how drugs effect the human mind and body. Prohibition breeds disrespect for law?enforcement; the agency that "should" hold the highest respect of the American society. Money spent on prohibition is an overwhelming figure that is not needed and is obviously accomplishing little. Those who want to be controlled by a substance should have every right to do so, because this right has equal jurisdiction as any other human right that has emerged from the sea of oppression and persecuted freedoms. The deaths resulting in the acquiring of alcohol have all but disappeared. When all non?medical dealings in alcohol were prohibited in the United States in 1919, the results were very similar to today's drug trade. Alcohol quality was brewed illicitly; importers were considered criminals and behaved as such; protection rackets, bribes and gang warfare organized crime in the United States. (Boaz, p.118) The enforcement budget rose from $7 million in 1921 to $15 million in 1930, $108 million in 1988 dollars. In 1926, the Senate Judiciary Committee produced a 1,650-page report evaluating enforcement efforts and proposing reforms. In 1927, the Bureau of Prohibition was created to streamline enforcement efforts, and agents were brought under civil service protection to eliminate corruption and improve professionalism. In that same year, President Hoover appointed a blue-ribbon commission to evaluate enforcement efforts and recommend reforms. Three years later Prohibition was over and alcohol was legalized.(Boaz, pps.49?50) Immediately, the bootlegger stopped running around the streets supplying illicit contraband. People stopped worrying about drunks mugging them in the streets or breaking into their apartments to get funds to buy a pint of wine. We now deal with alcohol abuse as a medical problem. Let us deal with the drug problem in the same way. Let us try not to repeat the mistakes of the past by continuing to escalate a war that is totally unnecessary.(Boaz, p.120) The repeal of alcohol prohibition provides the perfect analogy. Repeal did not end alcoholismas indeed Prohibition did not--but it did solve many of the problems created by Prohibition, such as corruption, murder, and poisoned alcohol.(Boaz, p.50) We can expect no more and no less from drug legalization today. At the core of Levinas's mature thought...are descriptions of the encounter with another person. That encounter evinces a particular feature: the other impacts me unlike any worldly object or force. I can constitute the other person cognitively, on the basis of vision, as an alter ego. I can see that another human being is â€Å"like me,† acts like me, appears to be the master of her conscious life. That was Edmund Husserl's basic phenomenological approach to constituting other people within a shared social universe. For Levinas, then, the fundamental reality to an interpersonal encounter is the basis for ethics. This ties in with ideas of ethics that Victorian-era scholars, Hume and Enlightenment scholars in general had about the obvious connection between empathy for others and moral behavior. (Wright, 1983, pg. 232; Parrinder, 1972; Halperin, 1974). Hume, for example, argued that empathy preceded more advanced moral judgments and was a necessary condition for those judgments: â€Å"[S]ympathy is the source of the esteem, which we pay to all the artificial virtues† (Wright, 1983, pg. 232). Hume's position is that empathy naturally guides us to behave to others morally: There is no need to tell most fathers that it is wrong to starve their children, and no need to tell people not to beat their friends randomly. It is when that empathy is stunted that pathological behavior is caused. Hume argued that the role of morality was merely to make explicit and clear the transition from obvious pri nciples derived from empathy to abstract behavior norms. Indeed, the Enlightenment in total agreed with Levinas' sentiment that it was human sympathy and interpersonal interaction that gave birth to moral behavior. We were having a pizza party for the class and we need to buy extra pizza for the teachers because the kids could only eat cheese. The issue was that some did not eat the same type of pizza as others. So, after that a coworker and I decided we wanted supreme and the others wanted chicken pizza. My understanding was that her and I was going half and half on the supreme pizza because when we made the order we both were telling our coworker what we did and did not want on the pizza. As the pizza arrived they gave her a whole pizza and they brought a supreme pizza upstairs which we was trying to figure out who pizza it was because other people was asking for some but we did not want to give it away until we knew who the pizza belonged to. However, after talking to my coworker she stated that the others thought we had just took their pizza to because it was in our class and did not know they were sending people to ask for the pizza because it was in our room but how were we suppose to know. It got me kind of upset and she told me not to worry about it. So later that day in the meeting after school I felt I needed to address the problem and told my coworkers how were we suppose to know the pizza in our room because our class is upstairs and you guys did not want the kids to see that type of pizza because they could not be offered any. They should have told us that they were coming to our room to eat instead of thinking we were trying to take the pizza they bought. From that day forward we made sure that we understand clearly what we are ordering and doing when it comes to lunch time or whatever.

At McDonalds the staff can become bored due to the repetitiveness of the work, therefore McDonalds need to ensure that their employees are motivated and there is good morale, otherwise they can potentially suffer of poor performance, as a result poor performance can lose the business a lot of money and may deter customers away from there branch. So to make sure employees are happy with their job McDonalds may consider introducing job rotation to the member of staff if they feel he/she is capable. E.g. more outgoing people are more suited to working on the tills and checking over customers, while less talkative or those who can handle pressure are better suited to working in the kitchen area. Additionally if there is a brand new food store opening close by, McDonalds may face fierce competition from them, because the public in general enjoy trying new things, they may find themselves becoming â€Å"bored† of McDonalds and opt for going to the new store for lunch instead, this can then result if a loss of income for a branch which may result in a cut of staff, however to counteract this McDonalds regularly create new meals, to keep customer interest and provide the public with a verity, for instance recently health has been brought up as a concern for McDonalds with a documentary called â€Å"super size me† highlighting the effect of eating fast food on a regular basis, as a result McDonalds has increased the amount of salad’s and nutritional menu’s, and have scrapped the super size meal. Additionally if Interest rates are increased in a certain area, it may mean result in short shortages, or McDonalds offer a lower basic wage to their staff, however in an area where the average household income is high, McDonalds may have to increase their basic wage to match other stores locally, to attract employees. McDonalds may also look to open a store in an area where there has been a sign of an increase in the Population growth rate; this will not only create jobs for locals, but also be profitable for McDonalds. Technological effects the advances in equipment, improved technology, news ways of working, this means when recruiting McDonalds may prefer taking on younger employees as in general they are able to work with and learn how to use computers and more technological equipment better then the older generation are. This technological revolution means a faster exchange of information beneficial for businesses as they can react quickly to changes within their operating environment. Beneath this is two images, one showing the recognisable Ronald McDonald and a member of staff with a smiling customer, this gives the business a good image, as well say showing McDonalds operates around a friendly and cheerful atmosphere. The next image is the writing McDonalds against a scenic background, this stands out as it’s a contrast to the rest of the poster. However it’s effective as it’s attractive and relaxing, which is important, as it’s a generally busy looking poster.
